OPERATING SYSTEM

Operating System is a program that manages computers internal functions and provides a mean control to the computer’s operations. The Operating System has three major functions: It co-ordinates and manipulates computer hardware such as computer memory, printers, disks, keyboard, mouse and monitor; It organizes files on variety of storage media such as floppy disk, hard disk drive, compact disk and tape; It manages hardware errors and loss of data.

The operating system is the basis for everything you do with your computer. It is the bridge between the computer hardware and applications using the system.

An operating system can be defined as:

“An operating system is system software, which is the set of instructions or small programs that puts your computer to work for user to provide fast & easy access to computer hardware and Softwares.”

The operating system files are stored on hard disks or on CD. When the computer is turned on, it automatically loads Operating system.

Process / Processor’s Management:

The microprocessor has to do a number of different tasks, for example the execution of programs, in case of an error to trap it and overcome it, communication with i/o devices. Process Management ensures that each process and application receives enough of processor’s time to function.

MEMORY MANAGEMENT:

The First task required the operating system is to setup memory boundaries for types of softwares and for individual applications.

I/O MANAGEMENT:

The Path between operating system and virtually all hardware components is not on computer’s motherboard, but it goes through a computer’s special programs called “Drivers”.

Drivers takes and sends data to computer hardware in the form of bits.
